The performance in a machine tool lies within the main spindle. The spindle bearings are among the most heavily loaded components. Quality, productivity and availability stand and fall with the condition of these bearings. Schaeffler has developed the SpindleSense to prevent overloads, therefore protecting the spindle bearings from damage. In this system, the displacement is measured directly at the bearings in the radial and axial direction. With its many years of know-how of bearings, Schaeffler can calculate the applied load via the displacement of the spindle and thus determine overloads.

The SpindleSense consists of a sensor ring, an axial and a radial measuring ring. The sensor ring contains 3 eddy current sensors each in the axial and radial direction that determine the distance to the measuring rings.
